Into The Sea looks at the ritual aspects of regular sea swimming, depicting individual swimmers as they approach the sea, early in the morning, late in the evening or at some time in between. Dublin is well served by a large number of bathing places, including some that were built when the railway line that runs along the coast was constructed over 150 years ago. These bathing spots are well used all year round and are places of communal gathering as well as solitary meditation.

About the Artist

Gerry Blake is a photographic artist based in County Wicklow. Following a career in computing, he took up the study and practice of photography in 2009, and is now a full-time photographic artist and tutor. After obtaining a post-graduate certificate in Photography and Digital Imaging from the National College of Art and Design (NCAD), Dublin, he completed his Master’s degree (MFA Photography) at the University of Ulster, Belfast in 2015.

Gerry has exhibited nationally and internationally, and his work is held in public, private and corporate collections. In his practice he explores how we are shaped through the environmental situations in which we find ourselves. He was the winner of the Curtin O’Donoghue Emerging Photographic Artist award at the 185th annual exhibition of the Royal Hibernian Academy, 2015, and was shortlisted for the Hennessy Portrait Prize at the National Gallery of Ireland in the same year.
