These images are from a series taken at the disused coppermines at Allihies, on the Beara peninsula, in West Cork. The title refers to a track from the village to the mines where it is said that each house had a pig. It displays the ongoing work of Nature on rock exposed by mining. This spectacular natural process s never ceases to amaze and excite the artist. She hopes that aspects of the lives of the miners might be considered when viewing the work.

About the Artist

Barbara Kenneally studied Medical Laboratory Science and worked as a Senior Medical Scientist in Biochemistry.

She has a longstanding passion for the Beara peninsula. Copper mining took place here in prehistoric times as well as during the Irish industrial revolution. The organic mineral deposition is dramatic but the interaction of Nature on the manmade interventions in the landscape is spectacular.

Having retired from science, she graduated with a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Applied Art, Ceramics, Glass and Textiles from CIT Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork in 2016.

On graduation she was awarded the Eli Lilly Purchase Prize for her photography, a Lavit Gallery Fledglings selection for her glass sculptures, and a Graduate Residency in the Glass Studio at CIT Crawford College of Art and Design for the academic year 2016/2017.

Since then, her photography and glass sculptures have been selected for many exhibitions. In August 2017 The Sunday Times recommended readers to go and see her work in the Sarah Walker Gallery in Castletownbere (exhibition Mining Light).

She has been commissioned to create both student and Alumni awards for Cork Institute of Technology’s Faculty of Business and Humanities. She also works on private commissions.
